Why Aren’t You Making More Affiliate Sales? And, How Can You Fix It?

why you're not making affiliate sales

Summary:

If you’re not making affiliate sales, you’re not alone — but there’s a fix. Most affiliates fail for 3 main reasons – because they promote the wrong products for their audience, drive untargeted traffic, and create content that stops short of selling.

In this post, you’ll learn exactly how to fix those issues fast by choosing offers that solve real audience problems, focusing on quality, targeted traffic, and using persuasive content with clear calls-to-action.

You’ll also see how to use AI to build your online business faster with tools like my free AI tools: Marie Grove’s Niche Finder GPT and Email Assistant GPT — designed to help you pick the right niche, write sales copy in minutes, and start converting traffic into commissions.

Why Affiliate Sales Can Be Harder Than They Look

Affiliate marketing is a proven way to earn income online, but it’s far from “set it and forget it.” Many beginners follow outdated tips, promote whatever pays the most, or rely on untargeted traffic sources — then wonder why nothing converts.

Without a system for choosing the right products, attracting the right visitors, and persuading them to take action, your sales will stay stuck. The good news? Fixing these core issues isn’t complicated once you know where to focus.

3 Common Reasons You’re Not Making Affiliate Sales (and the Fixes)

1. You’re Promoting the Wrong Products

The Problem:
If your audience doesn’t feel a strong connection between their problem and your product, they won’t buy — even if the product is “good.” At the end of the day, your job as an affiliate is to provide products that solve common problems your audience faces.

The Fix:

  • Identify your audience’s top pain points
  • Promote offers that directly solve those problems
  • Use AI tools like my Niche Finder GPT to discover profitable niches aligned with your skills and audience demand

💡 Example: A time-strapped entrepreneur is more likely to buy a “one-click marketing automation tool” than a “20-hour masterclass on social media theory.”

2. Your Traffic Isn’t Targeted

The Problem:
Big traffic numbers mean nothing if visitors aren’t looking for what you’re selling. Ten thousand unqualified visitors won’t match the value of 200 ready-to-buy leads.

The Fix:

  • Focus on buyer-intent keywords through SEO and content marketing
  • Promote your content in spaces where your ideal customers already spend time (niche forums, Facebook groups, Reddit communities)
  • Use AI keyword research to uncover phrases that show purchase intent

💡 Example: “Best AI email marketing tool” signals a buyer much more than “What is email marketing?”

3. Your Content Isn’t Selling

The Problem:
Some content informs, but doesn’t persuade. If you’re not guiding readers toward the sale, you’re leaving money on the table.

The Fix:

  • Use copywriting frameworks like PAS (Problem → Agitate → Solve) or AIDA (Attention → Interest → Desire → Action)
  • Place clear calls-to-action (CTAs) in your content — don’t assume readers will click on their own
  • Let AI writing assistants help you create persuasive, benefits-driven copy quickly

💡 Example: Instead of “Here’s a link to the tool,” try “Click here to see how this tool can save you 10+ hours a week.”

  • Personalization: Create audience-specific versions of your offers
  • Email Marketing: Draft complete sequences in minutes

By combining your strategy with AI tools, you can produce more high-quality, conversion-focused content in less time.

TL;DR

  • Choose products that solve real audience problems
  • Focus on targeted traffic, not just more traffic
  • Use persuasive content with clear CTAs to close the sale
  • Leverage AI tools for research, writing, and campaign creation
  • Always guide your readers to the next step

How To Build An Affiliate Marketing Business

There is a ton of information online. The problem is a lot of it isn’t complete or just isn’t accurate.

Since COVID, it seems that more people are interested in learning how to create income online. I suspect there are 2 main reasons for this:

  1. People found that they enjoyed working from home during the pandemic
  2. People found just how little job security they actually had and wanted to build a business of their own but didn’t want a brick and mortar business.

Affiliate marketing is not new. It’s been around forever, long before the internet. It’s basically just a commissioned sales job. The difference between online sales and offline sales though is huge.

To make sales online you essentially just drive traffic (potential customers) to a webpage. You don’t talk to them, you don’t have to sell them. The sales page does the selling for you.

It’s far less intimidating than working at sales offline!

Steps To Build Affiliate Marketing Business

There are many moving parts in a successful affiliate marketing business. When first starting out it’s easy to get overwhelmed. That’s why I would recommend starting with the basics. As your money and experience increase you can expand your skill set accordingly.

    So, start here:

    1. Sign up to an affiliate marketplace. I recommend Clickbank for those just starting out. Other affiliate marketing sites will allow anyone to sign up but when that person tries to promote a specific item they may need vendor approval. Vendors don’t always give their approval to unproven affiliates. So, you may have a hard time finding a product to promote. On Clickbank, though, most products don’t require vendor approval which is why I think it’s the best place to start.
    2. Learn how to drive targeted traffic. If you have the budget you can learn how to create PPC ads and drive traffic via Google Or Bing ads. This is a great method but it costs money and you’ll be paying money testing your ads while you’re learning – you’ll be spending money but probably not making money at first. You can also start with free traffic. Pick one free traffic source to begin with, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, etc., learn all you can about it. Build an audience and then move on and learn another. This will keep the free traffic flowing!
    3. Start building an email list. There are many elements to this: and optin form, follow-up emails, landing pages, etc. It’s not that hard to do but will take a little time to figure out. For that reason, I would begin with the first 2 steps first. But, do start building that list early in your affiliate marketing career.
    4. Get your own website. Buy a domain name and pay for hosting. This too should be done as soon as you can. Why? Because that great channel you created at Youtube or that wonderful Facebook group you’ve created don’t belong to you. It’s not likely unless you break rules, but it could happen that you lose this social media platform for a Terms of Service Violation. You might wake up one morning and all your work is gone. You need your own property and that is a website.

These are the basic steps to get started building a true, profitable, affiliate marketing business.

Keep learning, and most importantly keep doing and you can create the business you want.

    Hope this helps.

Good luck with your online journey!

    Bright-Shiny Syndrome – There Is A Cure

If you’ve spent any amount of time online you’ve either heard of, or been victimized by, Bright-Shiny Object Syndrome.

This syndrome will waste your time, waste your money and keep you chasing your tail without going anywhere.

Bright-Shiny Object Syndrome is the condition where you are always enthralled with new products, new software & new systems, to make money online… and you just keep buying them.

Your addiction is great for all those people who create those products, but for you, not so much. The more you buy the more they make. But, unless you break the cycle, you’ll never go anywhere and you can forget ever getting out of that 9-5 rat race.

I know, I was a Bright-Shiny Object Syndrome addict for more years than I care to count . But there is hope. You can overcome this malady and stop wasting your time hopping from one surefire system or software to another and actually start making money.

    Wanna know how?

Step 1: Step Away From Your Mouse. Stop hitting that “Buy Now” button. It’s tempting, I know, but you have to stop. Spending (wasting) your time and money on every new done-for-you software, or “proven” system that lands in your inbox is an exercise in futility.

The truth is that the only people making money on the majority of these products or systems are the people selling them. It’s actually in their best interests if you fail because then you’ll buy another product.

Now, it’s important to note that that doesn’t mean the courses or systems don’t work. They will… as long as you stick with them long enough!

Step 2: Figure Out What You Want. What are you trying to accomplish and what is the best way to get there? There are a lot of ways you can make money online. The best business model for you will depend on how much you want to make, how much you’re willing to work for it, how many skills you’re willing to learn / hone and how much time and money you can put into it.

Here is a great article on the different types of online businesses. Choose the one best for you.

Step 3: Check Your Expectations. Hey, I get it. You’re hungry, you are desperate for a change and you are impatient. Been there, done that, have the credit card bill to show for it.

That is what makes Bright-Shiny Object Syndrome so insidious – the sales pages for these products makes it all look so great. But think about it. Do you really think you can make a gazillion dollars with no experience in just 24 hours???

Of course not. These sales pages are created by expert copy writers to do one thing only – sell. They’re very good. And very tempting. But you need to become a discerning consumer.

Most of the products you’ll see can work with some patience and effort. But there is no overnight, instant money machine around (if you find one, hook me up, will you???)

Step 4: Only Buy These Types Of Products. This step will take a little discipline. But once you figure out the type of business you want to create online, as mentioned in Step 2, only purchase products that will either –

That’s it. You don’t need 10 different courses showing you how to start an eCommerce store, or a blog or whatever type of business you’re building.

Find the best course you can afford, follow it studiously and put what you learn into action. DO NOT get frustrated that “it’s taking too long” and go out and buy another course in a week.

Newsflash, the “new” course will take just as long to implement!

    Now You Have The Cure

A solid system, game plan, whatever you want to call it is all you need. Learn the ins and outs of the business model you want to build than put that knowledge to work.

When you’re making money and having success, you may find automation tools to do some of the more mundane day to day tasks. It’s ok to buy those too.

That’s it. That’s the cure for Bright-Shiny Object Syndrome.

And, that’s also the cure for huge credit card bills, lots of time online with nothing to show for it, and frustration.

Figure out the type of business for you. Invest in a quality course to teach you how to do it. Invest in quality courses to teach you how to get traffic to your business. Invest in tools to automate your workload…

    And nothing else!!!
